Moth Monsters and Sister Strife: The Challenges of ‘WondLa’ Season 2

When it came to creating the music and sounds that would exist in New Attica, Joy Ngiaw, WondLa’s composer, says she had a lot of fun incorporating electronic synths to portray this futuristic and advanced human civilization.

“It gave the score a totally fresh new palette to work with,” notes Ngiaw. “I also loved recording random objects and turning them into instruments. One example I’m especially proud of is a slinky I had lying around at home. I sampled it and used it as a percussive texture in the cue ‘Rendezvous Point’ on the Season 2 album. You’d never know it was a slinky when you hear it, but it adds a really cool, unique layer to the sound. I’m always looking for fun ways to create music that feels unexpected and completely tailored to the story.”

She adds, “The most challenging sound for me to nail down this season was for the Heart of the Forest. We see Eva’s evolution as she connects with the Heart and ultimately risks her life to protect it. The piece begins as a quiet conversation between solo cello and solo violin, then gradually swells as the full string section joins — mirroring Eva’s deepening bond with the Heart. The music evokes that vulnerable yet beautiful state of love.”
